.W. Law made the chocolate greys by accident. He bred a white claret cock to a regular grey hen and the offspring all came grey except one pullet which came chocolate colored. This made them think the cock was not a pure white claret. Instead of killing her she was allowed to roam the plantation for a long time. Then she was bred and the offspring were so outstanding that Law was offered much money for her. Henry Wortham drove from Texas and offered Law a thousand dollars for the hen but was refused. This hen was bred for many years and too differnet cocks yet never threw a bad one. She was preponenet in the brood pen. Several folks bred the hen and all claimed she was the best one ever to throw a feather. Its beleived Duke Hulsey got her when she was really old and over the hill. He also got some of her daughters. Over the years folks from everywhere claimed to have offspring from her. But like alot of people only a few ever got anything from her. there was a fellow who called himself Tan Bark up in the east who bred her for years for Law. He had some of the offspring. Now today some of the chocolates will come yellow or green legged. Mine are all yellow legged. Ive seen them green legged at a fellows house who got them from Harry Parr who got his from Hugh Norman. Hugh is reported to be the last man to have the chocolate greys from the original hen and her offspring. Hope this answeres your question. I know others have some more info on her which may or may not be accurate but who knows what went into the fowl 60-70 or even 80 years ago.
